Dolieb Hill was the first place in which the American
Missionary begun their mission in Upper
Nile Province
in 1902, south of Malakal, twelve mile away. It had been the head quarter for the
American Mission for evangelizing other places such as Nasir, Abwong Akobo,
Benitue and Pashila. The first Bible
School was established
there to train indigenous pastors to reduce the cost of training abroad.
The
Presbyterian Church of the Sudan
has been one presbytery for almost one hundred years and despite its rapid
growth, no decision was made to decentralize the Church to become more
effective and relevant to people whom they served. People spoke about the
decentralization of PCOS in many different General Assembly meetings, which is an
effective system of church governing within Presbyterian churches around the
World. But these voices were over sighted due to logical reasons such as the war
in Sudan
for half a century and the lack of manpower to tackle these responsibilities.
Presbyterian Church of the Sudan has been
known as the church of five tribes namely Collo, Nuer , Dinka , Anwak and
Muroli, but during the second civil war this Church has extended itmissions to other ethnic groups . Indeed it
has become more difficult to manage these churches. Therefore, there was much
need for decentralization of the Church to accomplish its tasks. Another
problem that compiled the Church to decentralize was Government
decentralization of states.
As a result of the ineffective services rendered
by PCOS administrations and the power struggle within the Church circle
especially during the General Assembly, people decided that the PCOS must be
decentralized and this decision was passed in General Assembly 1994, and it was
agreed that the implementation will take place when the peace is attain in
Sudan, but People should begin preparing themselves for that matter.
In 1998, Collo congregations in North and South
conveyed a conference in Renk as middle point; they begin discussing the
process of the implementation of decentralization. From that time they were
working for decentralization which was agreed by General Assembly 1994.
In 2002, PCOS General Assembly elected a body
to draw the decentralization constitution that would be presented to the General
Assembly in 2004 for deliberation but this did not materialized due to self
interest within administration. Their attitude made many people very skeptical
about the way PCOS was being governed.
In March 2005, Collo congregations went back to
Renk to deliberate on proposal constitution of DHP, so that they may approve it
and make it ready to General Assembly 2006, in which they were hoping to
present their request for the formation of the DHP for approval. The name
Dolieb Hill was selected in order to keep the historical place alive and had
nothing to do with Collo
communities, and also it was a kindof honor for Missionaries who did not spare their lives forbringingGood News to Us.
When the Moderator of PCOS postponed the General
Assembly because of his hidden agenda and without convincing reasons, his
mentality causeed the declaration of DHP without the blessing from the General
Assembly. In fact the moderator of the Presbyterian Church of the Sudan was not
ready to implement the resolutions of previous General Assemblies such as
decentralization because of his unknown phobia.
Yes, there was negative reaction from main
administration of PCOS which was not ready to implement the resolutions of
General Assemblies. The intention of DHP was to make the Church available to
the people and relevant by articulating the Gospel according to the context in
which people lived, and by being near to parishes rather then being very far
from the people whom we intended to serve.
Operational zone for DHP covered Ogigo south of
Kosti in the North to Twonga south of Malakal in the South both sides of White Nile. It was meant to serve all the communities
along the Nile, but due to tribalism disease
and political idiom of divide and rule, other communities criticized Collo for
the formation of DHP and theycalled it
a break away Presbytery or Collo Presbytery. We thank God that DHP has become
model to be follow by newly formed presbyteries which were approved by the
General Assembly March 2008.
Objectives of DHP:
1-To evangelize the
whole of its operational zone, and to reach unbelievers who are out of its
scopes or services such Maban.
2-To reconcile
communities among themselves by healing the war wounds which were rooted in the
hearts of people during the war era
3-To open Schools for kids
who miss their education during the war.
4-To stand as voice for
voiceless, fighting for justice, equality, dignity, freedom and citizenship for
all people within it locality zone.
Activities of DHP:
As new
institution that emerged out of deadly great need, much of it concern isto reach the people who are not reach with
the Gospel of Christ. Apart from normal weekly activities such Bible sharing,
fellowship, it had concentrated on the followings areas:
1-Mission
and Evangelism, yearly there is out reach mission with intention of church
planting especially to northern Collo kingdom, this evangelism task had result
in many prayers centers, which now DHP
begins to raise funds to construct into permanent churches. The construction of
the Churches is the one of great challenge which DHP is struggling with. These
days Khartoum congregations are raising funds
for building Athyithoy
Church. The plan was that
Kodok Church, which was already been constructed and Athyithoy Church, for
which Khartoum congregations are raising funds for itconstruction, both Kodok and Athyithoy
Churcheswill bethe base for evangelism activities in northern
part of Collo land and including all communities living on both sides of White
Nile. After that, then the mission and evangelism will be shafted to southern
part of our zone of operation to apply the same strategy, within the period of
six year we will be able to say that about 75% of the communities we wish to
serve have heard the Good News.
2- Youth
activities: the youth are the backbone of Dolieb Hill Presbytery, without
their activities within different congregations many lives that were saved
would have not be saved. Apart from weekly activities within their respective
congregations, the youth at level of presbytery has yearly conference that
brings in all the youth leaders:
-In order to
equip them with need strategy about how to win the souls for Christ, and to
develop their talent and gifts for future leadership. In real sense youth
conference had been great blessing to the whole Church in Sudan not only
DHP. Great remark and appreciation is that they raise their funds for the
conference within their limited resources.
-This
conference was been circulated yearly to different place, as part of evangelism
activities to spread the Good News. This conference had been initiated by
united youth body within Collo congregations when we were under PCOS, but after
the formation of Dolieb Hill Presbytery, the youth activities was annexed to
Youth Department within the Presbytery.
-Intention
of the youth activities are to influence young people to be better
faithfulbelievers who will take care
of the Church, for many of us still think that the Church is missionary
property, this is why people are passive in matter regard to Church
development, we look to missionary as everything, and we can not do anything to
let the Church function properly.
-The Youth
are leaders of tomorrow, we want to remove that kind of perception which had
slavery the Church in Sudan
for century. We don't want them to look at the Church as foreigner institution.
Indeed, this ideology had made the young people to join DHP leadership; now they
are effective participants and blessing to newly formed Dolieb Hill Presbytery.
-What the
Bible says '' Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before evil
days, and the years of nigh draw near '' (Eccl.12:1) become applicable to this
young people. Again, we can observe in their lives what Saint John wrote in his epistle that says: ''Little
children, you are of God, and have overcome the world, for who is in you is greater
than the one in the world'' (1 John 4:4).
3-The
Women activities: the women department is very important body within DHP
for many reasons:: First the women in Africa had been oppressedfor centuries by different forces that
enslaved them, such as illiteracy that lead them to grave exploitation in all
levels in the societies. Second women were regarded as second class person or
part of men property, these why they were not empowered in this juncture they
remained voiceless in society and they are not part of decision making that
affect their existence. In this respect they are not supposed to hold any
leadership position, except being house wives to rise children.
Thirdly,
they were regard as weak people; some men went so far to qualify that claim by
wrong interpretations of some verses within the Bible out of context to justify
their sick dominion mentality.
The above
mentioned prejudices and discrimination attitude were the contributed factors
to the backwardness in Africa continent
because one hand can not clamp. Therefore, we need to be aware that women has
role to play like men, and also they are created in the image of God and not in
the image of men.
To combat
such mentioned evils practice in society or even within the Church:
- DHP is
committed to reduce these problems by initiated this body to be the voice of
voiceless.
-Our concern
was to liberate women through the women department by training them with
different skills, so that they may become self supportive, rather than being
passive and dependence on men.
-Also to
equip them with knowledge in order that they may become effective participants,
for knowledge is the power that will enable them to claim their rights.
-Again,
providing women with skills in loner run will reduce financial constrain in
their families, for they can become self reliant and self supportive, instead
of being dependence on others even on small issues.
- Women
department intent to influence women about their role of leadership within the
Church, because majority of attendances in the Church services are women. As
part of body of Christ they should not remain spectators but participants in
the Church growth.
4-Fundraising
activities: since the missionaries brought the Gospel into Sudan, there was
no funds raise locally for the Church activities, but everything was brought in
from outside that made the Church to seem foreign to indigenous people, this is
why they did not own the Church financially until now. Yes, we appreciated what
missionaries had done, but we have to encourage our parishes to own the Church
by support it with need funds to run it activities smoothly.
Dolieb Hill
Presbytery as new formed institution had already started raising funds local to
cater for the Church activities. Apart from local congregation's fundraisings,
there is special fundraising for constructing two churches next year, one in
Athyithoy in northern Collo kingdom and another one in Pakang in southern Collo
kingdom.
Even though
we are merging out of devastated war and chronic poverty, peoplehave shown great commitment to support the
Church with scare limited resources they have. In fact through congregations
support to main administration of DHP, we were able to initiate two projects;
pharmacy in Renk and tents and chairs in Malakal. Now, we have two major
projects which we intent to initiate such as Ark Boat that will carry goods and
people from Kosti to Malakal, and also Bakery in Kodokbecause that place has no such service, our
problem today is the funds to carry out these task which God has put in our heart.
